Psychotherapy is not easily described in general statements. It varies depending on the personalities of the therapist and client, and the particular problems brought forward in treatment. There are many different methods we may use to deal with problems presented for intervention. Psychotherapy calls for a very active effort on the client’s part, involving a large commitment of time, money and energy. In order for therapy to be successful, clients will inevitably need to work on things discussed in session outside of session.
Psychotherapy can have benefits and risks. Since therapy often involves discussing unpleasant aspects of life, some may experience uncomfortable feelings. On the other hand, psychotherapy often leads to better relationships, solutions to specific problems and significant reduction in feelings of stress. Though therapy is expected to be helpful, there are no guarantees of complete success. Our providers encourage an open line of communication to assist clients in influencing their own course of treatment. The first few sessions will involve an evaluation period where the needs of the client are explored. By the end of this period, both the counselor and client should have a good idea of what it will be like to work together, and if it is a good match.
Different providers have different ways of conceptualizing the difficulties presented by clients. Individuals are encouraged to read through the biographies to get a feel for the type of therapy they provide.
